Building 201: Sustainable Land Use:
WHERE: NC Arboretum: 100 Frederick Law Olmstead
Way Asheville, NC 28806Tuesday, May 6th from 10:00 am to 12:00
pm
WHEN: next TBA
AGENDA:
What does land-use have to do with Green Building? Well, everything.
Decisions in land-use and how we plan our communities have the single
greatest impact on the energy
consumption of our houses as well as our communities at large. These
decisions affect our landscapes aesthetically and environmentally
and are the driving determinants of if
we even need a car let alone if your community is walkable. The
decision of land use is where green building starts and has the
greatest affect on your footprint. Joe and Daryl will discuss the
key elements of urban design and land-use planning and the affect
of pedestrianization. They will cover standard methods of practice
of good urbanism, the history of the movement, and cutting edge
tools to make better land-use decisions. Your
footprint is all about your feet!

Way Asheville, NC 28806
WHEN: Saturday, June 14th from 9:00 am to 5:00

This course will review the challenges and opportunities inherent
to green renovation, focusing on residential buildings. There will
be an introduction to green building basic principles and discussion
of how these principles may or may not apply to renovation. As with
new construction, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, materials
selection and others topics will be discussed. In addition this
class will also cover costs, existing toxins, challenges in older
existing homes, common issues in renovations and when is it not
worth it. This course is a great resource for homeowners renovating
their own homes as well as contractors looking to work on green

WHEN: Tuesday, June 17th from 1:00 pm to 5:00
pm
AGENDA:
Natural Building: What Is It? How Do You Do It? Why Would You Do
It?
“Natural building” is a catchall phrase for a variety
of building techniques that share a focus on using local or site-harvested
materials and simple tools to create energy efficient, low-impact
structures. In this four hour course, we’ll go over the basics
by comparing and contrasting a variety of methods including adobe,
cob, clay-slip straw, straw bale, cordwood and others. We’ll
also introduce natural finishes such as earth plaster and site-made
paints. Finally, we’ll discuss ways of integrating natural
building into commercial “green” or conventional building
systems, and options for natural building remodeling and “interior
decorating”. Our focus will be a practical, realistic look
at the pros and cons of implementing natural building solutions
in this modern world.
Clarke Snell has written two books on alternatives to conventional
construction techniques. He administers Think Green Building, a
small design, consulting, research, and rabble-rousing network.
